In memoriam:
Professor Emeritus
Sant Ram Arora

With deep sadness we received the news that Professor Emeritus Sant Ram Arora passed away on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. Professor Arora served on the faculty of the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Minnesota for 49 years.

He was an integral part of the Industrial Engineering program from its early years as a division of mechanical engineering until recently as a full-fledged department. During this time he contributed greatly to the development of the program through his teaching, research, and service. He also made important research contributions to the field of optimization and to the development of computer-aided decision support systems.

His expertise has been nationally and internationally recognized through his many publications and as a member of the Institute of Management Sciences, Operations Research Society of America, American Society for Engineering Education, American Society for Manufacturing Engineers, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and American Society of Industrial Engineers.

Professor Arora’s signature contribution is perhaps his remarkable record of graduate student advising. Over his career, he advised over 70 graduate students, including 15 PhD students who have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry.

The Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering are grateful for his many years of service and he will be missed.

A list of Professor Arora’s advisees can be found here (pdf). A resolution by the College of Science and Engineering upon his retirement and his award of Emeritus status can be found here (pdf).

Professor Arora is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sudha and his children, Sanjiv (Sanjula), Sujata (Andy), and Rachna. Service will be held on Saturday, April 14, at 1:00 PM at Washburn-McReavy.com Hillside Chapel 612-781-1999 2610 19th Ave. N.E., Minneapolis.
